Identity and existence greatly influence my work. I am interested in how we as human beings define ourselves and how we use that definition of ourselves to find our place amongst society. I am also interested in how each of us can be connected through feelings such as anxiety, wonder, failure, struggle, success and joy. I create work that relates one person to another through common themes such as nostalgia, rejection, acceptance, struggle, success, anxiety, self worth and self-definition. My inspiration comes from pop art, contemporary sculpture, societal pressures, intimate relationships, music, sound, human psyche and human reaction. Pop art enforces in me the reality that anything can be art, therefore the realms for creativity can be endless. As well as the endless possibility of materials and their possible uses, I am always drawn to the object. Contemporary sculpture influences me with scale, form and material.
Societal pressures and relationships have a heavy influence for many of us. These themes inspire me because they create my deepest memories. By translating these memories into my work I can more easily relate with the viewer.
Through my work I draw connections between myself and the viewer by creating a narrative context. By tapping into my own emotions through self-observation, analyzation and reflection, I use physical materials such as wood, metal and plastics, all of which range from within the construction industry. By using physical materials through traditional techniques, I create objects that connect with the viewer by tapping into their emotions by either telling a story, or I create an environment that stimulates the human psyche by impulsing thought and reaction. By drawing from my own emotions and experiences that deal with self-evaluation and societal placement, experiences from past shortcomings and triumphs, and interests dealing with material and esthetic, I reveal emotional and psychological connections that exist among us as humans.
